History
The Hudson Foundation started out as the Hudson Educational Foundation in 1984. Then Board Members, Claude Rowley, Jean Coleman, Jim Whitehouse, Bob Darr and Doug Ferman established their primary goal as “to enhance excellence in education”. By June of 1986 the Foundation had bylaws and articles of incorporation in place, as well as the IRS ruling giving the Foundation 501(c)(3) status. While not verified, we understand that the Hudson Educational Foundation was the third such foundation formed in the State and today there are hundreds of Educational Foundations in Michigan.
Everything the Foundation accomplished in the first 25 years is connected to the goal "to enhance excellence in education" and to an operating philosophy that states:
The standard of life and the economic viability of the Hudson community depend heavily on the quality of our educational system. Our community and schools must combine local resources and initiative in order to enhance excellence in education.
The Hudson community has long been known for coming together to identify and meet local needs. And it was in this knowing of a greater community need, that in January of 2010 the charitable umbrella of the HUDSON FOUNDATION began operation and working on behalf of the greater Hudson community. Since that time the Hudson Foundation’s Funds have grown in number and serve every aspect of the greater Hudson area. The Hudson Foundation’s sole purpose is to assist Hudson in helping itself. Hudson residents can give to large and small community-based projects and programs.
The Hudson Educational Foundation’s scholarship program remains strong and continue to grow. Over 35 scholarships each year in an amount exceeding $60,000 and staff mini-grants are awarded each fall for projects to improve the district.
Our community leaders saw a need and found a way to meet that need. They were embodying the local needs – local solutions philosophy that is at the heart and soul of the Hudson community.
